Abstract

By understanding the text prior to the interpretation that developed in both Judaism and Christianity, this study proposes an exegesis of Zechariah 13:7-9 based on the Historical-Critical Method: originally a possible imprecation against a coming evil civic ruler, the passage was transmitted in its canonical form as a messianic prediction of a good shepherd. In this pericope, as a result of all that they have experienced, the people discover their true identity in the relationship with YHWH, for he (the people) will call on his name and he will answer them as his people. Thus, in Zechariah 13:7-9 there is no restoration of all the people of YHWH, only of a third of them, who will be refined and tested, and then delivered from destruction. However, even this portion of the people would be subject to refinement by fire, and after this act of purification the formula of the covenant would be invoked: “I will say, ‘He is my people’”, and “He will say, ‘YHWH is my God’” (Zechariah 13:9).
