Abstract

The article aims to deepen, through narrative analysis, the authority of the apostle Andrew in the Fourth Gospel. It is divided into three parts, where in the first, the presence of this apostle in the Synoptic Gospels stands out, showing that we find Andrew inserted in the symbolic group of the Twelve in second place in Matthew's list (10, 2-4) and Luke (6, 14-16) and in fourth position in Mark (3, 16-18) and in the Acts of the Apostles (1, 13-14), being a particular sign of the authority he had within the primitive community. In the second and third parts, Andrew's presence in the Fourth Gospel stands out, where he is remembered: at the beginning, in the episode of his separation from the Baptist and the beginning of his following Jesus; in the center, by the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, followed by the abandonment of some disciples and the confirmation in the following of the group of Twelve, who remain (John 6, 67-71) and, at the end, when the Twelve are involved in the last dramatic moments of the final stage of Jesus' saving mission. Thus, Andrew confirms his authority in the Fourth Gospel, being the “first to be called”, the first to confess the Messiah and the first also to glorify the Lord.
